North Korean students who have defected to the South are set to study abroad under a new plan.
Education officials in South Korea have found that almost half of students who have come from the North often do not complete their studies at university level. In general, they do not have a high enough level of English to be able to cope with the demands of academic study, said the South Korean Ministry of Unification in a statement.
A new plan will see such students studying abroad in Australia for 30 weeks in order to improve their language skills, study prospects and future employability.
The statement said: “We hope our program will help participants to interact with international students while bolstering their English-language abilities.”
