Starting this autumn, school pupils in Turkmenistan will be required to attend schools for 12 years.
President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov has approved the change which means pupils now have to study for two years longer than they did previously.
School pupils have had to keep a close eye on how long they need to stay in the classroom: over the last few years, successive Presidents have changed the total number of years pupils must spend at school from 11 years to nine, and from nine to 10 – and now from 10 to 12.
This latest change is intended to bring Turkmenistan’s schools in line with international standards, whilst raising the quality of education and test results.
