Greek students have demonstrated over government plans to merge or close institution departments.
As part of the government’s ongoing austerity measures, around 350 departments and faculties face significant changes. It could mean that some existing students have to move to a different university to complete their studies, or that they have to change to a different degree course in order to gain their qualification.
The economic situation in Greece is severe, and the government’s mission to cut a further 150,000 public sector jobs by 2015 is a further blow to a country currently experiencing its sixth year of recession.
