altResearchers in the USA have developed educational software that senses how learners are feeling as they carry out various tasks.

The software copies the way a human teacher would adapt the pace of a lesson depending on how bored or interested the pupils appear. So instead of the lesson pace being guided by the pupil clicking on icons or selecting from menus, the software determines in what way and at what rate knowledge transfer takes place by reading all the non-verbal signals that give away a human’s state of mind.

The software, which has the working titles - AutoTutor and Affective AutoTutor – has already been tested on over one thousand pupils, so far with good results.
