altNorthern Ireland is to invest £170m in setting up a new education cloud-based network to serve all of its schools.

The “Education Network Northern Ireland” cloud will cater for 1,200 schools and allow access to online resources to around 350,000 pupils and teachers. It will be set up as part of the Classroom 2000 project.

The cloud will be flexible to allow for schools’ changing technology needs over time, to incorporate, for instance, a model where pupils bringing their own devices to school.

The project will be the first of its kind in Europe and will be installed and maintained by Northgate Managed Services under a five-year contract.
