Palestine gets its first ever education law

Stack of booksThe first ever Palestinian education law has been approved by the Palestinian Authority President, Mahmoud Abbas.

The new law will bring important changes to education in the Palestinian territories and will replace the current Jordanian law in the West Bank and the Egyptian law in the Gaza Strip.

The law will tackle all issues related to the educational process, such as: setting clear educational objectives, specifying the Education Ministry tasks, enforcing compulsory education and imposing sanctions on violators, explaining the education stages from kindergarten to high school, approving of academic acceleration, putting measures and conditions for the licensing of private and foreign educational institutions, and many more.

Minister of Education and Higher Education Sabri Saidam said that the Education Ministry took into international education experience in different countries into account when defining its own laws. The aim is to develop students’ knowledge rather than have them learn by traditional methods.
