The Turkish Education Minister has said that 483,000 Syrian school pupils are being educated in the country’s schools.
In an exclusive interview with Anadolu Agency, Ismet Yilmaz said that this was over half of the total number of Syrian refugee pupils (850,000) currently living in Turkey.
Emphasising the importance of education, the minister said: “We want to provide national education not only to our own children but also to those who have taken refuge in my country and those who are not able to live in their own country. If a person is uneducated, he or she will be open to additional risks wherever they are.”
Many students who are refugees have had an extremely disrupted pattern of education, with many missing out on years of study due to being displaced by conflict.
